Holiday Self Care Tips
Are the upcoming holidays stressing you out?! Do they start with anxiety and worry, planning, creating lists, and end with you feeling like you missed the meaning somehow?
Maintaining mental health during the holidays can be challenging due to various stressors, but there are several strategies you can employ to support your well-being:
Set Realistic Expectations: Don’t put undue pressure on yourself for a “perfect” holiday. Embrace imperfections and focus on creating meaningful moments rather than flawless experiences. You will be able to remember and process the experiences in a more meaningful way.
Manage Stress: Practice stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness. Regular exercise can also help alleviate stress and boost your mood.
Maintain Routine: Try to stick to your regular routine as much as possible. Consistency in sleep, meals, and daily activities can provide stability and a sense of control.
Establish Boundaries: Set boundaries with family or friends to protect your time and energy. It’s okay to say no to events or activities that may overwhelm you along with particular conversations you may not be ready to engage in. Develop a simple script for these, “I am not ready to talk about that, thank you for understanding”.
Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as reading, taking baths, listening to music, or spending time in nature. As much as you think you can, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Stay Connected: Reach out to friends, family, or a support network if you’re feeling lonely or stressed. Social connections can provide comfort and a sense of belonging.
Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: Both substances can affect your mood and exacerbate feelings of anxiety or stress. Moderation is key. If you are recovering from Substance Abuse or trying to cut down, creating a plan to support your efforts or sobriety will be important in maintaining your commitment.
Budget Wisely: Financial stress during the holidays can be significant. Set a budget and stick to it to avoid unnecessary strain on your finances.
Volunteer or Give Back: Helping others can bring a sense of fulfillment and perspective. Consider volunteering at a local charity or performing acts of kindness for others.
Seek Professional Help if Needed: If you’re struggling with your mental health, don’t hesitate to seek help from a therapist, counselor, or mental health professional.
Remember, it’s okay to prioritize your mental health during the holidays. Listen to your needs, be kind to yourself, and seek support when necessary.
